Do the humane laws of modern nations derive from English Common Law? This is often asserted. Are modern concepts of fair play and humane treatment of others the result of the slowly evolving trial-and-error improvement of standards of behavior? Maybe it was the Age of Reason. Or should we thank the Enlightenment? Or attribute it to the suppression of the “patriarchy”. Actually the advance in morality and laws occurred rather rapidly when our big Mother arrived. In peacetime his compassionate character led him to introduce a humane legal system and to spend time listening face to face to the common people, defending them against nobles when necessary. Beggars were fed from his table, he ate their leavings, washed their feet, ministered to the wants of the lepers, and daily personally fed over one hundred poor.
