No matter how often slavery is abolished it sprouts up again and again like a weed. But when and where was slavery abolished? Well…the full answer is complicated. Slavery was abolished over and over again in various locations. A simplified answer might be that it was opposed and/or abolished frequently in a lot of places, most often in a time and place where the Catholic Church was influential. Most educated people know about the achievements of Wilberforce and Lincoln. But those two men were late to the game of abolishing slavery. Under Catholic emperors the late Roman Empire abolished slavery a millennium-and-one-half before Wilberforce. All this leads to “Another Daring Proposition”from Setting The record Straight”.
