Setting the Record Straight - Explorers-Adventurers-Anthropologits-Missionaries - 9/1/18

A devout Protestant minister just observed to me that the Reformation had the good effect, in the 16th and 17th centuries, of an unprecedented spread of Christianity caused by the flight of persecuted Christians from Europe. They ventured to the New World and other distant regions. Once again the huge achievements of Catholic missionaries before 1500 were unknown by a well-educated Christian. If you want to feel overwhelmed by the straight record, listen to these stories of the early Franciscans, Jesuits, other clergy, and one great Catholic layman. They were giants full of courage, toughness, and profound reverence.

This is our uncomfortable and ignored history. In the British Colonial Empire there was widespread abuse of Catholics. This commonly  included slavery, ethnic and religious cleansing, and even the kidnapping of young Irish Catholic girls to “provide solace for slaveholders”. This widespread abuse in the colonies of Catholics because they were Catholics by the British Theocracy continued for centuries. In the French Canadian colonies an entire population of free Catholics were deported on crowded ships and suffered a 60% mortality rate. Many of the surviving were sold into slavery. Christmas was declared “too Papist” and declared illegal for centuries. Why don’t we recall all this. Perhaps it became impolite to speak of it until now.

Astonishing Louis IX was one of God’s great gifts to the entire world as a model of wisdom, virtue, and temperament. He was the real life embodiment of the legendary wise king described in many religions. He commanded the largest army ruled the largest and wealthiest kingdom, and led the European centre of arts and intellectual thought. In wartime he displayed genius as an innovator in the art of military logistics and wise strategy. He courageously fought at the front of every battle. In peacetime his compassionate character led him to introduce a humane legal system and to spend time listening face to face to the common people, defending them against nobles when necessary. Beggars were fed from his table, he ate their leavings, washed their feet, ministered to the wants of the lepers, and daily personally fed over one hundred poor.

Setting the Record Straight - Bringing Back Dads - Part 1

What happened to our Dads? Where did they go? How did Dads lose their honored status in the Christian family described in the Bible? Are Dads at fault or were they chased away from their children? We might find part of the answer when we consider the natural families of other advanced mammal species. New scientific studies have indicated that the Father is the most important foundation of a family.
